About Us

The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) is a statutory advisory body under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, promoting and protecting animal welfare across the country. Established under the stewardship of Late Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale, a well-known humanitarian, the AWBI has guided animal welfare initiatives nationally. In compliance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s directive, the State Animal Welfare Board, Assam was constituted in 2009 and has been reconstituted in 2014, 2020, and 2023 to strengthen its role in ensuring effective implementation of animal welfare laws in the state.

Constitution of State Animal Welfare Board, Assam

The State Animal Welfare Board, Assam has been constituted by the Government of Assam in compliance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s order dated 06/08/2008 under Writ Petition (Civil) 440/2000, ensuring effective implementation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, within the state. The SAWB, Assam has been reconstituted in 2014, 2020, and 2023 to strengthen animal welfare administration across Assam.
